Learning and Academic Emphasis

Our academic program is designed to provide students with the support and opportunities they need to achieve personal goals.

During the parent-student interview previous scholastic records, employment history and post secondary aspirations are considered to create an Annual Education Plan.  Where additional information is required, students will complete a series of assessments and/or meet with an educational consultant to investigate learning challenges.

Courses are offered in several ways. Our classroom credits (see schedule last page) are offered over a 9 week term; one subject in the morning session, the second in the afternoon.  Students may elect to enroll in only one classroom based course and earn a second credit through *Cooperative Learning Placements or *Night School and Weekend.  In some cases, students may use this flexibility to engage in a part-time job.

Foundation Skills
Our students benefit from an integration of basic learning and productivity skills. We have found that by improving a student’s time management, organizational and general study and test taking abilities, an immediate improvement in results occur.  Through their studies and with additional workshops, students will learn how to be more productive and have additional tools to approach their academic, career and life goals.

Teacher Feedback and Support
The school is open before and after scheduled class-time (including weekends) for students to receive feedback on their assignments or additional assistance with their studies.

* More information on these programs can be sent upon request.

Communication
Students and parents will receive a weekly report indicating academic success.  This tracking of short term progress allows for early intervention and adjustments, so that additional support can be provided to insure the achievement of set goals.

Experiential and Outside the Classroom Learning
The curriculum comes alive adding relevance and context to the subject matter.  As well, students whose learning styles favour a ‘hands-on” approach will benefit from this weekly component of our courses.

Personal Development, Community Interaction and Life Skills

Our academic system provides a structure and methodology so that students learn how to set and achieve goals and reach for their potential.

We are equally committed to non-academic aspects of a young person’s development.  We maintain a positive and safe environment and expose students to the world outside the classroom: the beauty, ugliness, waste and possibilities in their communities.  Our teachers and support staff have been hired with equal consideration for their character, experience and their ability to teach.

There will be many academic and non-academic opportunities where students will develop leadership, self-reliance and social skills.  They will be exposed to many new experiences and will be supervised so that the positive aspects and lessons can make an impact.

A monthly budget is allocated for each student so that they can pursue outside curriculum interests.  These include language or music lessons, sports, hobbies and any other activity that will contribute in a positive way to their development.

All students will be required to participate in monthly School Outreach Programs in addition to those community hours required for the Ontario Diploma.

The school maintains a 400 acre Outdoor Centre in northeastern Ontario, near Bancroft.  Students participate in various programs over the year and benefit from the conservation, recreation and specialty courses available.
