In this course you explore how different types of living spaces and forms of
shelter meet people's physical, social, emotional, and cultural needs and
reflect society's values, established patterns of living, and economic and
technological developments. Discover how to make practical decisions about
where to live and how to create functional and pleasing environments. You
also learn skills used in researching and investigating living
accommodations and housing.
This is an exciting opportunity to discover some of the innovative,
beautiful, and archaic ways in which people have built. Explore why people
build in particular ways, and dream about and create your ideal house, and
your ideal
community. As a group you will participate in a building project, explore a
variety of places to live, discover new
materials, techniques and ways to think about the built environment. You
will meet exciting and innovative architects, builders, planners, designers,
and explore occupational opportunities related to living spaces and shelter.
- Design your own ideal house and community.
- Build a tipi, a wigwam, a yurt and a cardboard house.
- Identify the ways in which political, social, economic, and technological
trends, as well as psychological factors, affect available types of shelter.
- Identify legal, economic, and social considerations involved in acquiring
and financing a home.
- Demonstrate an understanding of elements and principles of design relating
to home environments.
- Describe the home furnishings and equipment required to meet diverse needs.
